Words & Music Club

I write stuff and play bass with a pick. I think horror movies are cool and roller coasters are scary. Autumn should exist year-round and hot coffee is better than iced coffee. I wish I could skateboard. Captain America is my favorite. I love my friends.

HOME BASE

Currently–Holly, MI. On the porch, sippin’ some coffee. It’s blueberry flavored and really really tasty.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WRITING

I’ve loved writing since I was little. I write a little bit of everything–comics, short stories, articles, and music. These days its mostly comics and short stories.

WHY YOU PARTICIPATE IN W&MC

As both a musician and writer, I love the idea of combining music and prose together to create something unique. It helps flesh out my ideas and keeps the creative juices flowing. Sometimes I need that extra push to stay motivated, and having W&MC gives me a tangible goal to work towards with every prompt. The community rocks, and I love seeing what everyone comes up with for each entry!

YOUR WRITING PROCESS FOR W&MC

I tend to be an over-thinker, so I purposefully try to do the exact opposite with my writing. That is, once I have a tiny inkling of an idea I just go for it and start writing. Whatever starts to flow, I follow it and try not to get in the way. Very little editing as I go. The first draft of my stories are like excavating for the rough shape of it. I’m just trying to get the raw material, the core of the story, in place.

Once I have the rough shape figured out, I go back and mess with it. Piece it together, bend the shape, put a few fresh coats of paint over it. Once I feel pretty good about it, I’ll sit on it for a few days without looking at it or thinking about it. This gives me fresh eyes for final edits, and then I’m done!

I find that this method works best for me, otherwise I’ll just sit at a blank screen and not get anything done. Plus, it keeps the process exciting and surprising as I write. It’s like getting to be a passenger for the ride, unsure of where it’ll take me. That’s half the fun.

WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW?

I once beat The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess using only 3 heart containers.

WHAT YOU READ

Mostly fiction novels and comics. Anything weird and imaginative. I enjoy nonfiction as well, but I love seeing what kinds of worlds/characters/stories authors can imagine and getting lost in them.

My all-time favorite book is John Dies At The End by David Wong. It is the wildest, funniest, and one of the most scary things I’ve ever read.

WHAT YOU LISTEN TO

A whole buncha junk. Lots of punk. Anything with cool riffs and catchy melodies. When I’m writing, I listen to a lot of video game music or lo-fi beats. Anything that puts my mind at ease while getting the gears turning.

I have several projects in the works. One is a prose short story collection, which I’m hoping to release in the coming months. After that, I have a collection of short story comics I’ll be releasing! This will, hopefully, be out before the end of the year. These will be my first self-published releases! I’m incredibly excited and thankful for everyone I’ve gotten to work with on these. I’ll hopefully have more info on these in the coming months.

Aside from that, my band Copneconic is gearing up to release some new music in the near future. And finally, I’ve been working on a BIG comic project for nearly a year now. This one is incredibly exciting, but it’ll be a minute before I can give any updates on it. I can’t wait to talk more about it down the road, though!
