Words & Music Club

Brian Stout

I design training to pay the bills, but I love home roasting coffee, nerding out on films, writing, and laughing. I miss seeing my friends in person. Decide which fucks to give, because all and none are not the right answers. The fucks that I give include, but are not limited to, physical and mental health, creative outlets, friends, and saving the best for last, my children.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WRITING

I got serious about writing in college. I journaled incessantly with my headphones on. Writing helps me process, put distance between me and the thorns of life, and give something back to all the art I've loved over the years. My first publication was a letter to the editor in The Flint Journal, and then I got an article in the literary magazine at UM-Flint. I also published a zine with Brandon that lasted for a couple issues. These days, it's this, a blog I don't use much lately, film articles for The Ryder magazine, and some case studies and resumes on the side.

WHY YOU PARTICIPATE IN W&MC

From the day I bought Thriller on cassette in second grade, music has been such a major part of my life. How could I resist the urge to have this incredible outlet alongside many dear and future friends?

YOUR WRITING PROCESS FOR W&MC

I usually let the theme sit with me for a couple days. Sometimes that leads me to a song. Sometimes it leads me to the subject. I usually put the song on repeat while I write. I am usually the confessional type, processing something that's important to me and picking a song that's got a hold on me. I get a draft together, set it aside for a day or two if time allows, refine. and send it in.
